The Social Contract

I just came across this deliciously sarcastic passage in Rousseau's "The Social Contract." This is the rich addressing the poor: "I will permit you to have the honour of serving me, on condition that you bestow on me the little you have left, in return for the pains I shall take to command you." One cannot help but think of the Big Beautiful Bill, and wonder that Trump, the GOP, and their autocratic business allies remain in ignorance of what followed from this thinking, first in America and then in France ...

Oops, just buggered up my chances of getting into the States anytime soon, haven't I?
